- Oakenpaw is possibly a reference to the Ents, a tree-like race from J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Lord of the Rings.
- His Hero Book entry describes him as being "very, very patient" rather than slow, a trait for which the Ents are well known.
- His line, "They come with axes and fire", echoes the Ent character Treebeard, who in The Two Towers says of the orcs, "They come with fire, they come with axes..."
- Oakenpaw's name might have been inspired in part by Thorin Oakenshield, a character in Tolkien's The Hobbit.
- The latter part of Oakenpaw's name could have come from a convention used in Warriors, a book series commonly known as "Warrior Cats", in which apprentices' names include the suffix "-paw", eg. Firepaw, Graypaw, Ravenpaw, Ivypaw, etc.
- His line, "I. Am. Oakenpaw.", might be imitating Groot, a Guardians of the Galaxy character who often says, "I am Groot."
