- Murrlin is a likely reference to Merlin, a legendary wizard from medieval Welsh poetry also found in Arthurian matter.
- Murrlin's name is a cat pun on the name Merlin.
- One of Murrlin's lines makes reference to the sword in the stone motif associated with King Arthur, sometimes equated with his renowned sword Excalibur.
- That he is waiting for a king, as described in the Hero Book, as well as his line, "Hopefully, he will come soon," could be references to legends that say King Arthur never died and will return someday.
