- Maximus might be based on King Leonidas of Sparta as depicted in the movie 300.
- Maximus's phrase, "This is CATANIA!", is likely connected to the famous declaration, "This is Sparta!", which is now an internet meme.
- His line, "Careful, I might push you into a bathtub," could then be a reference to Leonidas kicking Persian messengers into a well, after shouting the aforementioned "This is Sparta!"
- His line about fighting better in small groups probably reflects the small number of Spartan troops who fought against the much larger Persian forces, 300 vs. over 300,000 respectively.[1]
- Maximus might be named after the main character of the movie Gladiator, Maximus Decimus Meridius.
- Maximus' dress and equipment appear to be based on those of the soldiers of ancient Greece known as hoplites.
- His "NOT-a-skirt" "skirt" looks to be the bottom part of a linothorax.
- The spear he gains at Rank 4 is similar to those wielded by the hoplites.
- From Rank 2 onward, Maximus wears a cloak like those worn by Spartan hoplites.
