- Boulder's appearance could have been inspired by the stone machines in the Disney animated film Atlantis: The Lost Empire, which featured intricately carved lines and symbols that glowed blue when activated.
- He might also be based on the colossi from the videogame Shadow of the Colossus, some of which are made of stone and have ledges for climbing, with weak points designated by glowing spots similar to the one on Boulder's headpiece.
- Another possible source of inspiration could be the Dredge from The Banner Saga videogame series, an ancient race of humanoid creatures supposedly made of stone with engravings on their bodies and who spoke a language unknown to humans.
